As a mom of twins, Mother’s Day is a holiday that is very close to my heart.

Of course, we use this holiday to honor our own moms or even ourselves as moms.  However, there are a lot of ways to make this holiday honor even more moms through our purchases and actions.

Here are some great ideas for gifts that will not only make the moms in your life feel special, but they will help moms around the world as well.

Bright Endeavors Candles

There are so many things to love about Bright Endeavors.  I discovered them at a fair trade festival in the Chicago area, so I love that they are local and, of course, fair trade.  On top of that, the candles smell great.

On top of their great product, Bright Endeavors helps young moms in poverty by giving them employment and job training.  You can read more about Bright Endeavors’s amazing mission to help these young moms in my blog post here.

Plus, you can pick up some of their candles in the Inspired Compassion store!

Trades of Hope Jewelry

Trades of Hope offers beautiful jewelry, handbags, and home decor created by talented artisans all over the world.  Their products are hand made, high quality, and very stylish.  Trades of Hope prioritizes fair wages and safe working conditions for their artisans, as well as environmentally-sustainable practices.

Additionally, Trades of Hope works to give women in poverty opportunities to create a better life.  Each piece tells the story of the artisans who created it and their area in the world, including India and Uganda.  Mothers in Guatemala, Cambodia, and beyond, many of whom have dealt with unspeakable adversity, are given employment that helps keep their families together.

Papillon Jewelry

Papillon is a compassionate company offering gorgeous jewelry, apparel, and even handmade dolls.  Each product is handmade and is, therefore, slightly different from all the other.  They use environmentally friendly materials, like recycled glass and steel drums.

Papillon’s mission focuses direction on the Haitian economy.  Haiti is facing an “orphan crisis,” as it is estimated that there are as many as 32,000 orphans in the country.  Many of these children were not orphaned due to death of their parents, but due to parents who were forced to give up their children because they couldn’t afford to feed them.  Papillon seeks to help end this crisis by giving employment to Haitians in order to help mothers and fathers stay with their children.

So, this Mother’s Day, as you are taking the time to buy something to make the moms in your life feel special, consider purchasing a product from companies like these to help moms you have never met create better lives for themselves and their children.

As Trades of Hope points out, statistically, every woman who is empowered out of poverty brings 4 more people with her.  So, your Mother’s Day purchases can brighten the day of so many more people than just the one who will open the gift.

Tell us about the special moms in your life, and the gifts you plan to give to brighten their days, in the comments below!
